The point of raw powerlifting is to minimize the amount of effort one has to put into gear. Bench press shirts, squat suits, and deadlift suits all require a lot of effort. In practice, “Raw” powerlifting means in competition, athletes are (generally) only allowed to use approved lifting belts, an approved singlet.
These are all common and valid questions that need to be answered prior to competing. Therefore, in an attempt to simplify the process and encourage everyone to enter into a competition, I've written this article that answers damn near every question a beginner lifter could possibly have.

Powerlifting, often confused with Olympic lifting, is an individualized sport in which competitors attempt to lift as much weight as possible for one repetition in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
Each lifter is placed into a specific division and classified by several variables including weight class, age group, and experience level. Competitions are generally all-day events that begin with the squat, progress to the bench press, and conclude with the deadlift.

Every lifter is allowed three attempts at each lift, making for a total of nine competition lifts throughout the day. At the end of the day, awards are presented to the lifters with the highest squat, bench press, deadlift, and total within their division. Having said all that, most lifters can lift significantly more weight with a belt on than they can without one. As such, if you're going to compete in powerlifting, I strongly encourage you to invest in a nice belt, use it appropriately, and wear it while competing. How do you know which weight class to compete in? So how do you know which federation to compete in? Find a federation or two that host regular competitions in your area and start competing. Choosing a weight class: This should be the least of your worries. A powerlifting competition consists of three lifts: There are divisions by age, sex, and weight. There are three judges to call the validity of each lift.
There are also various federations and rules about what gear you can wear, but that starts getting a little complicated. All you really need to know as a spectator is that each athlete gets three attempts at each lift and the goal is to have the largest total possible, when your highest successful attempt of each lift is added together. Now, you might be thinking a powerlifting meet is something you could never do.
You might be thinking you'd never be strong enough. For some reason competing in powerlifting seems even a bit more daunting than others sports. At a Brazilian jiu jitsu tournament, you might be one of twenty pairs of competitors out on the mats at any given time.
During the late s and at the beginning of the s, various friendly international contests were held. At the same time, in early November of each year and to commemorate Hoffman's birthday, a prestigious lifting contest was held.

Lifts were still measured in pounds, the bench press was the first lift, and there were still no suits, power belts, or fancy wraps. Mike Shaw 'lost' his world title, won the previous year, to American Jack Keammerer.
IPF and after[ edit ] The International Powerlifting Federation was formed immediately after the contest, and so none of the lifts could be yet registered as official world records.

The Worlds was also held in York. This time there were only 47 entrants: With 74 entrants, this was the largest Worlds so far. Inthe World Championships was held outside America for the first time, at the town hall in Birminghamhosted by Vic Mercer.
Unusually for a competition, the super-heavyweights lifted first. This was because the television company filming the event was only interested in filming the "big guys".

Since it was closely associated with bodybuilding and women had been competing as bodybuilders for years, the new sport was opened to them very quickly. As a result, the AAU lost control of virtually every amateur sport. Soon, controversy over drug testing would cause powerlifting to splinter into multiple federations.
Indrug testing was introduced to the IPF men's international championship, although the USPF championships that year did not have drug testing.

Weight belts and knee wraps originally simple Ace bandages predated powerlifting, but in John Inzer invented the first piece of equipment distinct to powerlifters—the bench shirt. Other inventions included specialized squat bars and deadlift bars, moving away from the IPF standard of using the same bar for all three lifts. The rules of powerlifting have also evolved and differentiated.
Many communities and federations do not class the sumo variation as a technical deadlift. Straps are also used, as help with deadlift in case of a weak grip but are not allowed by any federations in official competitions.
Belt is the only supportive equipment that is allowed by all federations in raw competition.
